Do you need Insurance to sell Frozen Food? Anyone know any insurers?
Need Help With “?” & A asked:
I have not yet begun, but would like to start at some small local stores. We’re talking maybe a few hundred dollars in sales a month only. This is done out of my house. Does anyone know anyone specializing in this type of insurance and if I need it?

You should get commercial insurance. Try chubb.

Yes you will need insurance. You will also need a commercial license, approval from zoning and the health department. Your food preparation facility will be subject to routine, usually annual, inspections.

Check around at your local retailers to see what they believe a person needs as well as what they require. You also should check your local ordnances at the state and local (city, county, etc.) levels to make certain that you have the required certification. I’d imagine a license or some type of certificate as well as health department certification might also be needed.
I’d definitely spring for at least some basic coverage, especially when you deal with food and ESPECIALLY when you deal with the public sector. It’s a good idea to protect yourself from possible liability, especially with some of the people out there and all of the things that can go wrong with food.
Before you begin sales, you might want to see whether or not a sole proprietorship or a corporation is a good idea. Being incorporated can cost money, time, and effort, but if something goes wrong, generally speaking, it’s the company and not you that’s liable. When you have defined your business, you’ll have a better idea of the kind of insurance you’ll need. Insuring the business with commerical insurers might provide the coverage you need based on your policy.
In conclusion, define your business, check your local ordnances, and network with your retailers to find out what they can do and what they need on your part. Then you should have a good idea as to how to purchase insurance. I know that it sounds like a lot for a home-based business, but you are selling food.
