Do Health Insurance companies penalize you for a stupidly self-induced injury and visit to the Emergency Room?

Mark R asked:

Simply, if you do something dumb and get hurt, something where a resulting injury is the effect of your own poor choices, will a major health care provider normally somehow penalize or refuse the Emergency Room costs? Or, is it common for a provider to change their decision to flip you the bill later on?

The scope of the expense would be admitting oneself to an ER, asking a doctor a question, having two x-rays, and a recommendation for at-home treatment.

Haha if you are hurt GO! You pay for the insurance, and it will cover you no matter how you got the injury to begin with. If it makes you more comfortable I’m sure they have seen worse, and if you think about technically most injury’s are “self-inflicted” to a certain extent.

Also I know a few people who have had to hit up the emergency room from cutting and skateboard injury’s which are self-inflicted.

I don’t think stupidity enters into it.
Plenty of accidents happen, and if you’re injured they have to treat you, even if you blew your finger off with an illegal firecracker or something.

    What’d you do?

If you’re hurt, regardless of the reason, your insurance company should pay for it. It’s just like being in an auto accident,if you rear ended someone, it was your fault but you’re still hurt and that is what insurance is there for.

    Good luck!

They absolutely cannot penalize you, charge you more, or refuse to cover it. If you had the insurance when you went in or when you go in, you are covered. Don’t let them tell you otherwise.
